TMA: So Kristina tell me a little about yourself and how you got started with Decorus Photography.
Kristina: I’m a twenty-something year old mermaid who lives on land with her little family in Denver, Colorado! I graduated with a Business Marketing degree but sort of “fell upon” this whole photography thing after my daughter was born. I was born in Estonia, and grew up in Brooklyn, New York and feel like I have always had an appreciation of raw and undefined beauty.
TMA: Estonia, New York, and mermaid living on land?! You can’t get any more creative than that! But speaking of “falling into” photography and creativity, how did you end up naming your business, Decorus? It’s such a unique name! Most of us have such a hard time deciding what to call our business, but you nailed something so memorable.
Kristina: Oh gosh. Choosing a name was definitely no easy task. Many photographers use their first and last names and I would have loved to do that. I truly feel that photography is an extension of myself so to use my name would have been the most fitting. But can you try and say Svezintsev, five times, fast? Let alone spell it? It wasn’t going to work. I decided I wanted to choose a name that would not only represent myself but was going to represent the types of images I hoped to produce. Decorus is the latin word for beautiful, becoming, adorned, and proper.
TMA: That’s great! There’s so much thought in what you do with your business, from the name to your photos. And speaking of your photos, they are absolutely stunning! Where do you get your inspiration from when looking for a location to shoot? –And/or elements you need in the frame when translating a story into a single image?
Kristina: I truly feel like the person I am today is very different from the person I was when I began my photography journey. I’m becoming more comfortable with knowing who I am as a photographer and what I want with each image I take. And that is so important to me in order to move in the direction I want to ultimately go in as a photographer. I am more interested in being able to tell a story through a stunning image than simply take a pretty picture. I am so heavily influenced by photo journalism that I try to integrate my inspiration by telling a story with every single photo that I take.
TMA: Well, you are doing such a great job of capturing specific moments in time and really emanating the emotions and beauty within that still frame. Aside from possessing this amazing ability, what has been your favorite thing about being a photographer? Or most memorable moment during a session?
Kristina: My personal growth. After what felt like a fall into this industry, I was looking for a way to make time stand still when my daughter was born. In a way, I was searching for meaning and purpose. In the beginning, I spent all of my time trying to capture every moment that I didn’t want to let go of during her childhood, and I still do. But I’ve found that I enjoy the beauty in other genres of photography as well. I am constantly trying to find the beauty in the things I see around me, everyday. I’ve become an adventurer. Something I am working on now is being able to train myself to see the beautiful people and places that surround me on a daily basis. There are so many people who have inspired me. Looking at their photographs, you see their soul, and I can’t wait to get there.
TMA: It seems that you are really in tune with who you want to become as a photographer. What would you say sets you apart from other photographers then?
Kristina: I have a vision with every shoot that I set. I love being able to make every shoot different from the next. After the initial meet with my clients, I immediately set a tone for the type of session I want to achieve. A vision gives me the confidence to walk and get every shot that I envisioned. Even though it may not always work out. 😉
TMA: Speaking of knowing exactly what you want in a shoot, one of your sessions included a birthing story. It must have been quite an experience capturing such a monumental moment for a family. Being a mom yourself, I’m sure your schedule can get hectic and scheduling shoots and running your business while also spending time with your family can be a juggling act. How do you do it? –and what does a typical day look like for you?
Kristina: The birthing story was one of the most incredible experiences of my career, thus far. The raw beauty and emotion behind the entire day was something that could only be felt, not described. With that being said, that is exactly how I feel about juggling my new found passion and my family life. It is a work in progress. Do we ever really figure it out completely? I’d love to know!
TMA: With such a successful track record and amazing pictures as proof, what advice would you give others who are trying to get into photography? –especially mothers who are running a business along with raising a family?
Kristina: You just have to dive in, head first and remember to just keep swimming. The tide will get high and there are going to be days when nothing goes right. But the days that do, are pure bliss. There are also going be people who tell you that it will never work. Take that fuel and use it to light the fire inside of your soul. At least that’s what I do.
TMA: Describe Decorus Photography in three words.
Kristina: Raw. Organic. Moments.
TMA: Last but not least, what is the best way to book a session with you?
Kristina: Email me: firstname.lastname@example.org
