TOP 10 DO’S AND DON’TS OF GYM ETIQUETTE
The real scoop on what ladies should be doing and not doing as advised by a gentleman.
The gym. A magical place where effort and persistency can result in jaw dropping and life-changing outcomes. From losing 140 pounds through self-determination or the help of a personal trainer to toning of muscles in one’s body to increase self-confidence and improve health. It is a gateway to transformations that can manifest to reach a healthier overall endgame. However, as of late, it has become the new “hunting ground” of sorts. A common place for men and women to showcase arrogance and subliminal promiscuity.
Let me explain…
There was once a time when the gym was solely meant for working out. Where the purpose was to shed weight, gain muscle, lean out, and ultimately reach your body goals. To find a safe place to sweat out the fat and continually make and keep your gains. Not to become a conglomerate of people walking around as billboards, advertising their bodies in unbridled attires seeking out wanton attention.
The gym’s roots have not changed, but the people who succumb to the shallow world of social media that have filtered in have taken its atmosphere to new troubling heights. But don’t worry. There are still those of us who value it for what it truly is… Actually a large amount that does not condone inappropriate and flat-out ridiculous actions that irritate frequent, logical gym users.
In order to preserve the gym’s original intention and avoid embarrassment, follow these cardinal rules because there really are legitimate do’s and don’ts of gym etiquette.
1. DON’T WEAR FULL GLAM MAKEUP
Ladies, please avoid putting on full glam makeup when heading to the gym just to sweat it all off. Too much makeup is not attractive nor is it the best thing for your skin. After all, you’re heading to the gym. To sweat. Not impress or date or gain any sort of attention. If you are seeking attention, you’ll only attract betas and “fuck boys.” (You know exactly what I mean) Plus, sweat streaks across your face when you wipe of the sweat? Gross. Skip the liquid foundation and if you’re coming from work, pack wipes to take it off before heading to the Stairmaster. Trust me, clogged pores is an aftermath you don’t want to deal with.
2. DON’T WEAR ANYTHING PROMISCUOUS
Promiscuous gym clothes? Believe it or not, it’s a little too common. Transparent yoga pants? Spandex that can be mistaken as booty shorts? Sports bras and Sophie shorts combination? Camel toes? Too thin tops that allow everyone at the gym to determine whether it’s too cold in the gym or not…the list is endless. There is nothing wrong with being confident in your own skin and being proud to show how hard you’ve worked to have that beach body year round. Here at The Modern Alice, we encourage women to be confident and love themselves. However, there is an appropriate way to do this. As with anything in life or going anywhere in public, dress accordingly to be treated with respect. Take yourself seriously so everyone around you does too.
3. DON’T TAKE SELFIES OR MIRROR PICS
Selfies post workout in the locker rooms? Sure why not. 100 selfies or mirror pics on the squat rack to show everyone you’re working out? Please don’t! Seriously. Don’t hog machines and weights from others who actually need to use them so you can promote your #fit lifestyle on social media. Let your body do the talking. Checking in at the gym every single day and posting a picture of yourself in front of the weight rack is obnoxious and labels you as a braggart. Also, limit the Snapchat and videos of butt workouts to a minimum so, again, others can use the machine.
4. DON’T JUST HANGOUT AT THE GYM
A simple wave, quick (and I emphasize quick) chit-chat, and simple hello to acknowledge a gym buddy’s presence is great—perfectly acceptable. But hanging out for two hours small talking about life or engaging in full-blown conversations dealing with personal drama, completely foregoing your original plan of working out, is a complete no-no. Come to the gym with a fitness goal in mind. Don’t come to mingle or, worse, use it as a hunting ground to meet guys in full contoured make-up, perfectly coiffed hair, and carefully curated head-to-toe galaxy inspired gym outfit. Don’t go to the gym to date. Please just don’t. Also, don’t interrupt another’s intense workout because you want to exchange a few words. Be courteous and focus on why you came in the first place and stick to your workout.
5. DON’T QUIT BECAUSE IT HURTS
Don’t be afraid to start your fitness journey and stumble along the way. Not doing certain workouts correctly at first or reaching your weight goal right away does not mean you need to cancel your gym membership. There will be times when you get frustrated but that doesn’t mean you have failed and you should quit. The gym has an extraordinary way of teaching you the meaning of perseverance and discipline. Challenge yourself everyday to get better. Don’t for a second think that you can fail in the gym and attaining your fitness goals then miraculously expect yourself to excel at anything outside of that. Like anything in life, you have to work hard for it and do it right to achieve your goals.
6. DO INCORPORATE WEIGHTS AND NOT JUST CARDIO
Most girls start out as cardio fiends. Cardio is great but adding weights is even better. Shaping and toning your body requires your muscles to undergo time under tension. An hour and a half of cardio alone will not get you the results you seek. Incorporating weights, along with your cardio on the other hand, have great benefits to them which can take your workout to the next level. Don’t be the skinny fat girl. (Yes it’s a thing. We’ll dive into this in the next coming article). But seriously, venture into the hard work and earned sweat. Your body and your mind will thank you!
7. DO BE THE GIRL THAT CLEANS UP AFTER HERSELF
Just like everyone else, rack your weights after you use them and clean your station. It’s never a good sign when you leave your section cluttered and sweaty. It’s common courtesy. Don’t be the girl who leaves her weights on the bench. That is just plain rude and inconsiderate. Be an adult and clean up after yourself. You’d except it from others, so make sure to do just the same. Plus, be a good example for those who are new to the gym so they know what to do. For those who have never been, they observe others quietly to see what they do and mimic their actions. Lead by example.
8. DO HAVE A SENSE OF DECENCY
You know those women who are either (1) full of confidence or (2) do not give an ounce about anybody’s opinion and walk around the women’s locker room stark naked? Yeah, avoid being that woman. Again, we love a confident lady, but at the same time, do be a “lady.” Be mindful of your surroundings and cover-up. Strutting around in your birthday suit can make others uncomfortable and helps to avoid any unnecessary confrontation or inappropriate behavior. Remember the Playmate that Snapchatted a naked woman, body shaming her to the poor anonymous victim’s dismay? Let’s not let that happen. Protect yourself.
9. DO TRAIN WITH YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER
Going to the gym with your significant other to train is a great relationship building activity and habit to get into. It’s a great way to feel closer by working together to attain a similar goal. You’ll learn a lot from each other and find new respect in the other person’s determination to keep going and willingness to push you to meet your own fitness goals. Plus, there’s nothing more sexually attractive than seeing your partner pump some iron and look good doing so! Just keep the PDA to a minimum or better yet, nonexistent until after you’ve left the premises.
10. DO HAVE FUN
As cliché as it sounds, HAVE FUN! Working out can burn you out and doing the same routine can easily become boring. Have fun with your workouts. Try new things. There are free classes in most gyms along with a pool and a gymnasium for basketball or volleyball. Don’t get stuck doing the same workout over and over again. Butt workouts aren’t the only thing circulating on Instagram. Other full body workouts are also available so try those out if your routine is becoming monotonous. Be open and enjoy the journey to living a healthy lifestyle!
Well ladies, these are the top 10 do’s and don’ts of gym etiquette. I hope there was some good takeaways for you. Let me know what you think of the list and if there are any others I missed!
