5 Ways To Lose Weight and Stick To Your Diet

As holiday season looms over us, it’s easy to get lost in the sea of homemade mash potatoes and grandma’s secret apple pie recipe with a pit stop at Starbucks for our favorite Pumpkin Spice Latte. The stacks of carbs and sugars a lustful temptation we just can’t deny and another excuse to trudge around in our leggings and oversized sweaters. Let’s face it, Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners are a sure bet for food induced comas and a diet easily thrown out the window. Something we all both love and dread in the next coming weeks.

So how do we combat these cravings when trying to look our best in our new holiday outfits?

HERE’S 5 WAYS TO LOST WEIGHT AND STICK TO YOUR DIET (BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER THE HOLIDAY SEASON HAS LONG GONE):

  1. TAKE BABY STEPS

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. If you are just starting on a diet or currently trying to maintain one, start slow and get educated. Avoid following a diet plan where you shock your body so much it crashes, especially right before the holidays. Going cold turkey on everything isn’t always the solution. That, and trying every diet fad and detox out there. Educate yourself through research or consult a professional first. Attacking your body through food deprivation is dangerous. Start slow and work your way into a proper diet. Allow your body to adapt smoothly by picking certain things to eliminate from your current diet that will assist in a healthier transition. For instance, cut out sugar and increase your water intake. Once that has been achieved and is a constant, start incorporating more greens through juices in the morning then limiting your carbs. Apply this same process when complimenting your diet with exercise.

  2. KEEP HYDRATED

Even though this is a constant advice, regardless whether you are on a diet or not, it is definitely important to drink your intended water quota. Not only that, but by hydrating yourself, you keep any temporary cravings at bay. The more water you drink, the fuller your feel. So make sure to keep your glass within reach when eating breakfast, lunch and dinner. Plus, you are able to flush all the toxins from your body a lot better than when you are dehydrated because water is a natural lubricant that softens stool and promotes evacuation of the bowels. So make sure to drink your water! As an added bonus, feel free to add lemon and ginger to up your detox game.

  3. EAT OFTEN

Snacking often really does help keep your metabolism revving throughout the day. By eating small meals instead of larger ones, you are able to keep within your required proportions (as you get fuller faster) and get a wider range of healthy foods in you (just pack the right snacks!). On a serious note, however, avoid skipping meals and crash dieting. This an unhealthy way to lose weight and is a catalyst for binge eating later on. According to an article from Prevention, Fiorella DiCarlo, RD explains, “Your hunger hormone—ghrelin—and satiety hormone—leptin—work best when nourished every four hours…if not, they go out of whack and can cause overeating later.” Try planning your meals ahead of time, especially on days you know you’ll be crazy busy and might be likely to skip.

  4. DON’T SKIMP ON SLEEP

According to recent studies, including Harvard Medical School, there is a direct correlation that inadequate sleep can actually lead to weight gain. The more sleep-deprived you are, the higher your levels of the stress hormone cortisol are, which increases your appetite. Lack of sleep is also a contributing factor in the inability to process sugar as “the mitochondria in your cells that digest fuel start to shut down” which causes the sugars in your body to stay and result in high blood sugar. Skimping on sleep also makes it a lot harder to deny our cravings as it supercharges the brain’s “salience network,” which connects sensory stimuli. This essentially means that those donuts and pizza are a dozen times more delectable and irresistible to us than a kale salad.

  5. EXERCISE

This is pretty self-explanatory, but let’s take a quick dive into it anyway. Exercising is extremely important if you would like to lose weight and stick to your diet. By keeping your body active, increasing that heart rate, tearing and repairing muscles, and sweating out the toxins, you are burning calories that ultimately causes you to lose all that unwanted fat. Now when it comes to exercising, it is vital to (1). start slow and (2.) do your workouts correctly. When we mention slow, what we mean is to take a progressive approach. Just like with diet, if you are not typically an active individual, it’s imperative to start a workout routine that will not cause injury to your body. Running 10 miles immediately or going straight for 100 pounds on that bench press is not a good idea. Second, one of the biggest and most recurring mistake that people tend to do when exercising is using incorrect form. This is dangerous and can really hurt you which could be a catalyst to stress eating and being discouraged to go back. Again, do your research, hire a professional trainer (with credibility), or go with a fitness buddy that knows their stuff. Everyone’s body reacts differently to weights and cardio so make sure to know your mental and body limits.

Remember, there are no such things as an instant diet. Losing weight and getting that healthy body that you want and deserve is attributed to a culmination of things: diet, exercise, habit, and mental toughness. There is no one-step cure. It takes dedication and discipline. Start slow and progress. If you want to lose weight and stick to your diet, you have to continually undergo a healthy journey. Losing weight and maintaining that weight is a lifestyle change. Not a temporary detour.
